In the north, the Istria peninsula includes the major coastal resorts of Porec, Pula, Opatija and Rovinj; the Kvarner region has many islands and islets with good beaches. Further south, are the Split and Makarska regions. Zagreb, the economic, cultural and administrative heart of the region, sits prominently on the River Sava. Dubrovnik was once considered to be the most beautiful city in Croatia with its medieval walls and palaces. |

I spent one glorious week in the historic city of Dubrovnik, it was fantastic! The best bit is the old town of Stari Grad with its narrow cobbled streets, churches, marbled squares ? it's great to just stroll through the city and soak up the atmosphere. I stayed in the Youth Hostel Dubrovnik (the only hostel in the city), it was basic but well equipped and the prices were pretty low. Currency is the Croatian Kuna, it's very cheap, and you can get a 3-course meal for around ?4-8!
