Pisa Pisa is known throughout the whole world for its fabulous Leaning Tower, but there is so much more to the city than just this striking landmark. The city of Pisa started its life as a seaside settlement more than 3,000 years ago and was first built up in the mid-eleventh century. Pisa is full of wonderful, historical buildings and monuments dating back many hundreds of years and much of Pisa has retained its medieval appearance. In the north-west part of Pisa you will find that there is an immense green lawn on which four extraordinary buildings stand in sparkling white marble. These structures are the enormous, breathtaking Duomo (cathedral) - built just under 1,000 years ago, the cathedral's bell tower -also known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the circular Battistero (Baptistery) – the largest in the whole of Italy.
