Food in Lapland
Although Lapland is surrounded by countries
like Finland, Norway and Sweden it has retained its own style
of cuisine. There are a few essential food types used in the
majority of tradition Lappish cuisine which include a wide variety
of fish that is traditionally smoked and then served as part
of a course. One very special item that you can taste when on
your Lapland holiday is the cloudberry which is a yellowish
fruit that you will not find readily anywhere else. The cloudberry
is the most precious fruit in Lapland. For the most part berries
are used in Lapland to make desserts
and tasty sauces to compliment your main course and add that
little bit of extra flavour.
No holiday to Lapland is complete without
the mention of Reindeer however I don't think the kids
will appreciate what we are about to tell you. The most traditional
main course you will be served on your Lapland holiday will
probably be Sauteed reindeer. This fried reindeer is usually
served with mashed potatoes and raw sugared cowberries. If you
prefer, you can also have a nice meal consisting of a smoked
reindeer for the main course.
You now get all of the core food of the Lappish cuisine served
in a variety of ways with Swedish, Finnish and influences form
other surrounding counties. You will also in some places find
that even the Americans have managed to influence the cuisine
in Lapland when you see reindeer burger
on the menu at certain fast food chains.
Food on your Lapland holiday (if you
are on a package deal) will probably consist of a simple intercontinental
buffet breakfast and a lunch that will probably be something
like sandwiches and soup or something that's not too heavy.
The dinner will usually be a 3 course meal where you will get
the opportunity to experience the more traditional Lappish foods
with the appropriate alternatives for the kids as well.
