Mahdia Mahdia is a small seaside town based between Sousse and Sfax. It is hard to imagine that used to be the capital of Tunisia. The Central Mosque in the city dates from the 10th century. It is an extraordinary building. The main entrance to the Medina is through a huge 16th century gate. If you walk through the old city of Mahdia you will see the vestiges of the ancient ramparts, visit the "Cape Africa" lighthouse and the brilliant sailors cemetery.
The Mahdia of today is that of the fisherman throwing his nets and the silk weavers in the Rue Sidi Jaber. Only a couple of km from the town you will find many modern first class hotels and one of the finest beaches in Tunisia.
