Portimao

With around 300 days of sun each year, Portimao is one of the most preferred holiday resorts in the Algarve. Until the early eighties, Portimao was one of the most important fishing and canning centres in Portugal but after the recession the tourist development has become the main base of its economy. The city is nestled at the mouth of Arcade River, which provides Portimao a splendid natural port. The church of Our Lady of Conception is a must visit for those who like baroque art, boasting an impressive carved altar. Portimao is surrounded by many beautiful beaches and places to visit; the small village of Alvor or Amarcao de Pera with its 18th century fortress are just two of them.
