Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a Southern Asian island in the Indian Ocean. The capital city is officially Anuradhapura, although Colombo is the commercial capital and many locals actually refer to the city of Kandy as the capital. The most enjoyable way to travel has to be the Tuc-Tuc. These are 'three wheelers' which run all night long and are amazing value for money. The must see in Sri Lanka is the Beautiful 'Temple of the Tooth' which houses a tooth from the Lord Buddha and is generally considered the most holy of shrines.

Sri Lanka Holiday Review - Fab Time! Excellent Guide

Submitted by: Beverly
Date of travel: 17-August-2010

This holiday was the best two weeks ever, we decided it was one of the most enjoyable holidays we?d had. I had been given the name of a Tour Guide before we left for our holiday, I contacted him and he called me to make arrangements. His name is Rohan Fernando and was absolutely brilliant. It was my dad?s 70th birthday whilst we were there, Rohan organised a really special day for us riding an elephant, a safari and a lovely firework display in the evening at the hotel. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience and really enjoys giving you a holiday to remember, we spent 6 days travelling around and cannot praise Rohan enough, he treated us like VIP?s nothing was too much trouble for him. We made a saving of ?1,200!! Our holiday company were charging ?399 per person for a basic 4 day tour, with Rohan we had 6 days and 5 nights half board accommodation (which Rohan organised for us), all 4 of us, for the price of 1 person!! And I?m sure we saw a lot more! Rohan stops off en route to show you all aspects of Sri Lankan life, people at work, coconut factory, brick making factory and fruit tasting. If you would like him to contact you, please feel free to e-mail me beverlysayle@yahoo.co.uk, leaving a contact number and he will call you, it's cheaper that way. He made our holiday one of the best! Nuwara Eliya train ride through the mountains is a must, it?s beautiful, very cold at the top so take a jumper ? only spend 1 night there as there isn?t much to do after you have been to the Tea Plantation which you will do on the way up. The Botanical Gardens in Kandy are lovely and Pali Harpana made it for us ? he is so knowledgeable and funny! Riding the Elephants is great, especially if you have children ? it will be something they will never forget as with the Safari, elephants, birds, monkeys and water buffalo in abundance, this is all in the area of Sigirya Rock. Temple of the Tooth - Kandy Full body massage at a local Spa - wonderful! We had a day in Columbo, stopping on the way in Negumbo to have a look at the fisherman attending to their daily catch and selling (very smelly!) We did so much more, too much to mention ? we had a really great and memorable time. Sri Lanka is a beautiful island full of the most wonderful friendly people you could wish to meet.

Sri Lanka Holiday Review - Seashells Negombo

Submitted by: Lesley
Date of travel: 25-September-2007

We recently stayed at the 2* Seashells Hotel in Negombo which was a really pleasant surprise. The room was terrific for us, we wanted a clean bed, a reasonably sized room with a good bathroom. We had a ground floor room which was about 10 steps from the beach. Amazing. The food was plentiful. Breakfast choice was great, something to please everyone. Fresh fruit, cereal with milk, eggs (scrambled, fried or in an omelette (cooked whilst you wait), breads of all shapes and sizes, traditiional Sri Lanka breakfast (hoppers etc) and then of coure your continental stuff. Fresh juices, butter, cheese etc. If you couldn't find something there to eat, then you must be the fussiest person on the planet. Again, we've heard bad thing about the Seashells Hotel and we find that people must be living in some sort of bubble to find anything major wrong with this hotel. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Service is a bit slow but for goodness sake you're on holiday, take a break from the stress of city life. We liked Negombo but it was a culture shock for us as we've never been anywhere like this before. There are no shops as we would know them but nevertheless, there are plenty of things to see. The pastry shops are worth a visit, try the cakes. We then did a 6 day tour of the island, visiting Kandy, The Elephant Orphanage, Nirwewa Eliya, and many other things in the North of the island, wonderful, wonderful wonderful. The weather was glorious for the whole 14 days except for one thunder storm over the sea and one mini rain storm which cleared up really quickly. However Nirwewa Eliya is colder cos of its location. Give Sri Lanka a chance, it worth visiting and revisiting-we're definatley going back again next year.

Sri Lanka Holiday Review - Sri Lanka is a beautiful place

Submitted by: Kyle
Date of travel: 18-June-2007

Sri Lanka is a fab place. I've never been any where like this before, it was a recommendation so I thought I would check it out on the internet and see what it had to offer. The hotel we stayed at was called the Sunil’s paradise hotel, we paid 4000Rupees (£35) a night which we thought was reasonable. You had to pay for extras such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks etc but we enjoyed eating out so that wasn't much use to us. The beach was just 2 minutes away, and watching the sunset of an evening was romantic, me and my girlfriend would sit on the beach and relax with a few drinks. There is a few things to do there, and there is some great evening entertainment too, the food is different but its very tasty and the price varied on which bar or restaurant you dined in. It was just a wonderful place to be basically, it’s much better then the average holiday I always seem to go on. It was a great holiday and a lovely resort, something I’ve never discovered in my life before. I'm glad I took a chance and would travel back there again sometime.
