Panama Canal History
When cruising the Panama Canal consider the incredible history of what is without a doubt one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century.

The idea of a canal was first muted by King Charles of V of Spain in 1524 who ordered a feasibility study.

In 1878 the Columbian Government awarded a contract to build the canal to French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, who had overseen the Suez Canal. The task was more difficult than could be imagined with incredible construction problems and the deaths of more than 20,000 workers. The company founded for the purpose went bankrupt in 1889.

The French sold the contract to the USA and construction began again on the canal in 1904. 75,000 workers were employed. Construction took ten years. The Panama Canal was finished and the first boat sailed down it on August 15 1914.

Many cruises offer commentary and stories illustrating the incredible human achievement of the building of the Panama Canal and the mass of intrigues and politics which surround it.
