Areias De Sao Joao is a good holiday destination without being too spectacular. There are plenty of beaches there and you will find that everyone sets up pretty early for a nice long day of just sunbathing and reading. Once the sun goes down there is a new favourite pass time and that is the bars and restaurants where you can easily spend a few hours eating a four course meal especially since the sea food is of such high quality.
