Hong Kong Travel Guide

About Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most famous places in the whole world. Although extremely busy and full of culture it's also efficient, hushed and peaceful: the transport network is excellent (much better than the London one).

The shopping centres are extremely unique and even sell donkey outfits, the food is as expected tasteful and colourful and as most would say - legendary, and the temples and quiet corners of parks are contemplative oases and a definitely must see with tourists.

Things to do in Hong Kong

You can start from the vantage point of Victoria Peak, where you will be able to overlook the world's busiest deepwater port and see an astonishing city geared not only to making money but feeling good about it.

During Night time it is a bit Las Vegas but with much more culture and history. It's like looking down into a volcano as the lights are everywhere. The view is simply breathtaking.

Although Hong Kong has a British colonial past, it has always stuck to its roots and Chinese culture.

Before getting around you need to know that Hong Kong is divided into four main parts - Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands.

Kowloon and the New Territories are situated on a peninsula of the Chinese mainland, near the northern side of Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong Island is on the southern side of the harbour facing Kowloon. So that is easy to remember right?

The busy and vibrant city is centred around Victoria Harbour. The main business district is Central, on Hong Kong Island. Admiralty commercial district, situated east from Central is known for restaurants and clubs; then Causeway Bay, a major shopping area so if you are worried about finding things to do - this area will definitely keep you busy.

What is most amazing is that towering above it all is the 'Peak', Hong Kong's premier scenic outlook and residential district, which happily has plenty of public green space.

Hong Kong Harbour

Hong Kong Island
This is where you can find the busy financial and commercial centre with its famous high skyscrapers, and which has a lot to offer such as: shops, bars, headquarters from companies and, for those who feel like it, a handful of culture namely a few museums and some sights. Make sure you go to Victoria Peak where you can have astonishing views of the surroundings.

Kowloon
Is the area situated at the south tip of the peninsula and faces Hong Kong island. This paradise of shops, bars and hotels is not only popular with tourists but also with inhabitants of Hong Kong Island who can easily take the ferry to this melting-pot of everything relating to spending your money.

North Hong Kong
The Northern part of Hong Kong is known as the New Territories. Although many tourists tend to just rush through NT to arrive at the border, it might be a good idea to explore this area with its great character. You will see small ancient rural villages alternated with modern towns.

The Outlying Islands
As the name suggest these are islands and the name Outlying Islands refers to any of the other 235 islands, including the popular destination of Lantau Island. There you can find the giant Buddha, the popular Hong Kong Disneyland, Hong Kong International Airport, and Tai O - a characteristic fishing village built on stilts - definitely a must see place.
