Gambia has become an increasingly popular winter sun destination in recent years for European holiday makers on account of the number of attractive package deals available and the wide range of stunning beach resorts and tourist destinations to choose from.

With a climate which is near to perfection, especially in coastal areas, popular holiday destinations in the Gambia include the vibrant and welcoming capital of Banjul and the quality resorts along Gambia’s spectacular coastline.

With its excellent hotels, attractions and natural sights, the extra good news is that the Gambia is relatively easy to get to - only a six hours flight from London - and with excellent tourist transport options once you get there.

Geography
The Republic of The Gambia, commonly known as The Gambia, or Gambia, is a country in Western Africa. The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, bordered to the North, East, and South by Senegal and with a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean in the West.

Gambia Climate 

Gambia benefits from all year round sunshine making it an ideal winter holiday destination. With a rainy season between June and October the best time to visit is from November to April with cooler evenings and ideal day time temperatures ensuring a pleasant stay. From November through to April the country remains mostly hot and dry with coastal regions offering some of the best holiday options. Maximum average temperatures during the winter season are around 32-33C and you can expect up to ten hours of sunshine a day.

Gambia Resorts

Banjul
– Interesting mix of colonial buildings and bustling markets. Lies on an island at the mouth of the Gambia River and is normally the entry point for international travellers.

Cape Point – Includes a superb sandy beach. The Cape Point promontory makes up the very start of the northern ocean seafront with a selection of superb beaches. High quality accommodation options.

Serekunda – The largest and liveliest town in Gambia with a good selection of shops and markets.

Abuko Nature Reserve – Wildlife reserve with hundreds of bird species and wild animals including crocodiles, porcupines and monkeys.  

Kartong – Small, pretty fishing village with super beaches and a beautiful inland landscape to explore.

Bakau – Stunning beaches and cliffs with good accommodation at hand.

Kololi - Lively resort town on the Atlantic Ocean coast surrounded by the Bijilo Forest.  

 

 


Kotu – Bustling tourist resort with hotels, restaurants and great beaches including Kombo Beach.

Bijilo – A quieter tourist spot with fine beaches and first-rate hotels.

Brufut – Good selection of hotels, beaches and entertainments.

Travel

Gambia is only a six hours flight from London. Main airport is Banjul International which takes regular flights to and from Western Europe and African nations. The airport is 20km South West of the city and a similar distance to the South East for reaching the Atlantic coast resorts. There are two main roads through the country along the southern side and the northern side. There are several car rental companies in the Gambia, available via hotels or the airport; as well as river cruises, coach tours and a range of taxi services.

Gambia Tours

Tour operators offer bush and beach safaris around South Gambia. Tours include full day excursions using 4-wheel drive Land Rovers or mini-trucks. River tours on the River Gambia are also popular often with opportunities for fishing.
